Teach Your Children Well
Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6
The Bible does not promise that children are immune from temptations, tests and trials. They are subject to the same tactics of the devil as we are. The devil will do everything he can to trip them up. In fact, they may face greater attack since they represent a point of vulnerability for us parents. They will have to face uncertainties and situations that will pull them in a direction away from God.
But we do know and believe that they will go through the water and it won’t overtake them, and through fire without being burned (Isaiah 43:2). They will overcome their situations and rise up as champions.
Our role as parents is to prepare them to face their challenges. There is only one way we can do that and that is to get the Word of God deep down into our children’s hearts.
When our children have the Word hidden in their hearts, God will work with them. He has a point from which to begin dealing with them.
Our children’s ability to make wise decisions depends on the degree of the Word of God instilled in their hearts. The Bible tells us clearly that the Word is to dwell in us richly (Colossians 3:16). The Holy Spirit can remind our children at just the right time of the Word they need most to do what is right in the sight of God.
In contrast, when they don’t have the Word of God in their hearts, they have no basis to make wise decisions. They are insecure about what to do and likely to make poor decision and choices.
What can we do to get the Word of God in the hearts of our children?
Isaiah 28:10 says, it is “precept upon precept; line upon line…here a little, and there a little.” We instill God’s Word by giving our child one bite at a time, along with lots of repetition. It happens in those small moments, while doing the dishes or driving them to school, when we make time to communicate and listen to our children – every day a little bit here and a little bit there. Don’t wait for the perfect time, because that might never come.
We need to remind our children of God’s ways and purposes in their lives. It’s not about being a perfect parent. It is about God’s divine plan for your family. And it’s never too late – to equip your children – even if they are grown and out of the house.
Will you choose to instill the Word of God in your children – line upon line and precept upon precept? Now, that’s the choice-driven life!
