7 Practical Values To Help You Make Choices in 2011

Happy New Year!

How the Choices In Your Decision Making can bring Glory to God

Did you know 90% of the choices you make as a Christian involve areas where Scripture says surprisingly little? The Bible doesn’t say anything about who to marry or what house to buy, how you spend your free time, how many kids you should have; there are just no explicit instructions in the Bible.

Of course Scripture forbids all clear-cut sins such as lying, cheating, stealing, murdering, or committing adultery. The Bible also tells us to live by faith and not by our circumstances. Christians don’t question whether they should read the Bible, pray, or tell others about Christ. Scripture is very explicit about those things.

There are, however, a lot of questions that seem to fall somewhere in the middle. These are all those issues dealing with Christian freedom—things that fall between what God prohibits and what He commands. What entertainment is acceptable? What kind of music is okay? What can a Christian do or not do on Sunday? What about what you wear, what you eat and drink, or how you spend your free time—what does the bible say about those things?

When you run your choices through the following principles from God’s Word, you will find both clarity and true freedom to live your life to God’s glory.

1.    Will it help me spiritually?
1 Cor. 10:23
A “profitable” thing is useful, helpful, or to your advantage to do; and the idea behind “edify” is to build up spiritually. So based on this verse, ask yourself, “Will doing this enhance my spiritual life? Will it cultivate godliness? Will it build me up spiritually?” If not, you should seriously question whether that behavior is the best choice.

2.    Will it bring bondage?1 Cor. 6:12
In the second part of this verse, Paul is saying, “I will not be brought under the power of anything.” If what you are considering can be habit-forming, why pursue it? Don’t allow yourself to be in bondage to anything or anyone. You are a bond-servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, and Him alone.

3.    Will it defile God’s temple?
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body (1 Cor. 6:19-20).
Don’t do anything that you know will harm your body or bring shame—it is the only instrument you have to glorify God. Romans 6:13

4.    Will it cause anyone to stumble?
1 Cor. 8:8-9
This is the principle of love. Rom.13:10 If you know that your choice—what you consider “in bounds” and approved—causes another Christian to stumble and sin, love that brother or sister enough to restrict your own freedom. That is not very popular in our self-absorbed society, but it is biblical.

5.    Will it further the cause of evangelism? 1 Cor.10:32-33
Whether you are aware of it, what you allow or disallow in your behavior affects your witness for Christ, and the world is watching. It’s an issue of testimony—what your life says about God. Your testimony either tells the truth about God, or it tells a lie. The choices you make in areas where Scripture speaks principally rather than specifically should reflect your concern not to bring offense to God’s reputation but to bring Him praise instead.

6. Will it violate my conscience? Rom. 14:23
1Cor.10:25-29 contains three references to abstaining from a certain practice “for conscience sake.” Never train yourself to violate your conscience. If your conscience is troubled by what you consider, don’t do it. If you aren’t sure about it, don’t do it. It is hard to overstate the value of a clean conscience, but it is worth keeping your conscience clear so that your relationship to God will not be hindered. If you’ll keep yourself in prayer and the study of God’s Word, you will inform your conscience so you can “walk as children of light…finding out what is acceptable to the Lord” Eph. 5:8, 10

7.    Will it bring glory to God? 1 Cor. 10:31
That verse is clearly both the summary and the goal of all the principles listed above. Isn’t our heart’s cry to glorify our Lord and Savior with our lives? Think about your decision—Will He be glorified, honored, and praised through it?
So the next time you face a decision where Scripture is less than specific or overt, run it through the principles above and enjoy your freedom in Christ. Happy New Year from The Choice Driven Life to You!

#1 New Year Resolution

The New Year

People have a way of looking at the end of one year and towards the beginning of another as a way of encouraging themselves to start making changes.  If I were to make a New Year’s resolution, I would resolve to make the kind of change that would help people receive even more and more of the love of God.  I know from past experience, with a resolution like this, not only would I be able to make key changes in my own life, but I would be able to help other people make changes in their lives as well.

And wouldn’t you know that as I’ve continued to press in for more change, I have discovered one of the most powerful teachings I have ever received, and it’s on the direct relationship between the blessings of God and the way we treat people.  This revelation was triggered in me by Luke 6:38, where Jesus said: [Read more…]

8 Guidelines Toward True Forgiveness for 2011

What would you say is the single, most outstanding thing about God? What’s His most important characteristic? Some people would say it’s His power, His holiness or His goodness or how much He loves us and so forth. But I believe God Himself would give a totally different answer.

In Exodus 33 Moses asks God to show him His glory.  The word “glory” refers to the heaviest, biggest, grandest thing about someone. It’s the sum total of their worth.
So what Moses was actually saying was, “Lord, I want to see the weightiest thing about You. I want to know Your grandest attributes.” What did God say to him in response?

Exodus 34:6-7 tells us, “The Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.”

As we approach the end of another year we begin to reflect. It is during these reflections that we come to hard choices and decisions.

One of those choices that we have to make is forgiving people that have hurt us. It is a choice to make that decision. Show mercy instead of resentment toward that person. It will set YOU free!

Here are 8 guidelines to get started.

  1. Recognize your emotion. Know exactly how you feel about what happened and be able to articulate what about the situation is not OK.
  2. Choose what you are going to do. Make a commitment to yourself to do what you have to do to feel better. Forgiveness is for you and not for anyone else.
  3. Know that forgiving is not pardoning. Forgiveness does not necessarily mean reconciliation with the person that hurt you, or condoning of their action. You don’t have to go on vacation with that person. You want peace especially in your own heart.
  4. Get insight and understanding in what is happening or has happened. Choose to get the right perspective on what is happening. Recognize that your primary distress is coming from the hurt feelings, thoughts that are going on and not what offended you or hurt you two minutes – or ten years – ago.
  5. You have to choose your reaction to the situation. Don’t let the situation rule over you and throw you around.  Yield to the Holy Spirit who is always there to help and guide you into the right direction.
  6. Understand that you are the only one that controls you. Give up expecting things from other people, or your life, that they do not choose to give you.
  7. Choose to not replay it over and over in your mind. Draw near to God; He is your help in time of need.
  8. Move forward in life and not dwell on the past. Remember that a life well lived is your best revenge. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, and thereby giving the person who caused you pain power over you, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.

This way you can enter 2011 with a clean slate and conscience.
Remember:

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.

When I Fall, I Shall Arise

Tonight I was reading this update of a friend of mine on facebook “Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time”. This New Year is a great time to start!

It made me think, just as it probably makes you think. There are choices we have to make and at the beginning of each year we like to make new resolutions in a  various areas of our lives.

Anybody can fall down, cry and quit. Anybody can fear and hide. If you’ve got God, you don’t have to do that. You can lift your head, set your face like a flint and keep the faith. You can speak to whatever problem is rearing its head at you, resist the devil and get victory. [Read more…]

5 Tips for The Preparation Of 2011

5 Tips for The Preparation of 2011 out of The Christmas Story

December is a month that means a lot of different things to all of us. Some of us have good memories and some of us do not have those great memories. But to all of us it is a busy season, that’s for sure. We can get as busy as we choose to be. We have to make choices where to go to and choices in what to do in this particular week. And then, the New Year is coming, where we have to make choices on what we want to accomplish next year. If we don’t make any choices, the year and time will make choices for itself and we will meet all of those choices  as the year unfolds. [Read more…]

Jesus, Our Emmanuel

“Hark, the Herald Angels Sing” is a popular Christmas carol sung during the holiday season. One of the lines in the second verse says in reference to the birth of Jesus, “Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus our Emmanuel.”

The Gospel of Matthew further elaborates on Jesus our Emmanuel by quoting from the Book of Isaiah: “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME EMMANUEL, WHICH BEING INTERPRETED IS, GOD WITH US” (Matt. 1:23).

Emmanuel: God with us. People around the world are following various paths hoping to find a way to their god. But we don’t have to search for our God or to strive to reach Him. He came to us! And not only did God come to the earth to dwell with us, but if we have made Jesus our Lord and Savior, now God also dwells in us (John 14:23). [Read more…]

Mary, did you know?

Have you ever thought what you would ask Mary if  you could have a conversation with her?

Wow Mary, what if you had known all this? How did you handle the news of your pregnancy? The angel that came was magnificent. And when he said, “The Most High will overshadow you! You’re going to have His Son!”… what could she say or do?

She probably had so many thoughts racing through her mind when Gabriel appeared. How do you even begin to understand that God has chosen you to be the mother of the “Son of the Most High”? Now, Mary had to make a choice. A choice of “not to fear”, a choice to trust God and not listen to what people were going to say. It probably made no sense to her at all.

Mary reacted in the only way she knew how and that was to make a choice to accept what God had planned for her. She had grown up knowing the power of God they worshiped. She knew of His love and His provision. And if that was what God wanted for her, then how could she do anything but accept His plan?

It wouldn’t have been easy Many women who had sex outside of marriage were stoned. Joseph choose to stay on her side marry her. But the fact remained: she was the town scandal. Her pregnancy was the subject of gossip everywhere. It didn’t matter what she said, people were going to think what they wanted.

Joseph and Mary knew that they hadn’t done anything wrong, but who believes two young people who were already engaged? There must have been times that she felt very isolated. Elisabeth, her cousin understood and spent quite a bit of time with her. But outside of Elizabeth and Joseph, there was no one who really understood.

She had to trust the Lord completely. Daily, hour by hour, minute by minute, she had to remind herself that God was in complete control and that He knew what He was doing.

How can you benefit from this story? everybody’s situation is unique. There are times for everybody that we have to face unexpected events or shocking news. For some that mean a pregnancy outside of marriage. Or maybe it is an illness or a job loss. It is tempting to let those situations overwhelm us, isolate us and make us doubt God.

It’s a time to choose life and not death, that’s for sure. A time to look to God as our only source and trust Him completely. When you make a righteous choice from a heart that is filled with love towards God; God will come through for you. He is always the same, no matter what happens to you; He is right there to be there for you.

Your life may not turn out how you expected, but it will turn out better than it ever could apart from God.

Made in the Likeness of Men

Written by Rick Renner from The Sparkling Gems. This book is one of my very favorites; so, today I choose one of Rick Renner’s devotional. I am sure you will like it!!

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.- Philippians 2:6,7

At this time of the year, believers all over the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. His birth is one of the greatest miracles that has ever occurred, for it was a moment when God Almighty laid aside His glory and appeared on earth as a man. How wonderful, how marvelous to think that God would temporarily shed His divine appearance and actually take on the flesh of man! Yet this is precisely what happened the day Jesus was born in Bethlehem. [Read more…]

Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Baptism of the Holy Spirit

by Billy Joe Daugherty

The term “baptism of the Holy Spirit” comes from the prophecies made by John the Baptist and Jesus concerning this experience. John said to those he baptized in the Jordan River, “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT and fire” (Matthew 3:11).

Jesus spoke to the apostles just before He ascended back into heaven and ”He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, ‘which,’ He said, ‘you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT not many days from now’” (Acts 1:4-5).

Holy Spirit Regenerates and Renews Life

At the point of conversion, the Holy Spirit gives birth to a new creation in the believer (John 3:16, 2 Corinthians 5:17). “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5).

The basic work of the Holy Spirit in salvation is to impart a new life to a person thus making him a child of God (1 John 5:12, John 1:12). Through the operation of the Holy Spirit, you become a part of God’s family – the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). It is a fact, “No one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:13).

All of us as believers know the Holy Spirit in the sense that, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our Spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16).

However, God has more for you. In addition to blessing you, He wants to use you to bless others.

Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit has been active in the earth since creation (Genesis 1:2). He moved upon shepherds, kings, and prophets enabling them to accomplish various tasks. The prophet Joel spoke of a time when God’s Spirit would be poured out upon all flesh.

And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. Joel 2:28-29

Men and women, young and old, would be a part of this great outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost After the Resurrection

After the resurrection Jesus told His disciples, “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49).

The baptism of the Holy Spirit was called the promise of the Father in this passage. Jesus said it would be an enduement with power from on high. These followers would be endowed with God’s power to be witnesses of Jesus. According to His instruction, some 120 followers of Jesus, including the disciples, met together to wait for the promise of the Father.

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4

Power to Witness

An important reason for the baptism of the Holy Spirit is power for witnessing of the living Christ. It could be termed “enablement” or “ability” from God.
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Acts 1:8

And those 120 went into the streets witnessing of Jesus. The Jews who were gathered in Jerusalem from all over the world, because of the feast of Pentecost, heard the wonderful works of God in their own languages (Acts 2:11). Finally Peter stood up and preached about Joel’s prophecy and the resurrection of Christ.

“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about THREE THOUSAND SOULS were added to them” (Acts 2:41). The results were amazing as they witnessed in the power of the Holy Ghost. Soon another 5,000 believed the Word and were added to the church (Acts 4:4).

Rivers of Living Water

Jesus described the Holy Spirit as rivers of living water that would flow out of the believer’s innermost being.

Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39

The Holy Spirit produces rivers of life, love, joy, peace, and power to flow out of your spirit to meet the needs of others.
Jesus said those who believe upon Him SHOULD RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT.

The Comforter and Teacher

Jesus taught His disciples concerning the ministry of the Holy Spirit in their lives. One of the names He used in speaking of the Holy Spirit was Comforter. The Greek word is Paraclete, meaning “one called alongside to help.”  He also said the Holy Spirit would teach and guide the believers.

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17

The three-fold nature of the Trinity is revealed by this scripture. Although Jesus and the Father and the Holy Spirit are one, Jesus prayed to the Father and the Father gave the Holy Spirit through Jesus.

An unbeliever cannot receive the Holy Spirit, for Jesus said the world cannot receive Him. The Holy Spirit had been with the disciples, but Jesus said He would be in them (John 14:17).

The Holy Spirit, at the time of need, brings to your remembrance the words of Jesus. He also teaches you how to apply God’s Word in your life. “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me” (John 15:26).

The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to testify of Jesus to the believer. He reveals the wealth and riches in Christ. He glorifies our exalted Lord and Savior. He opens your eyes to what is promised to you in Christ. ”However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” John 16:13-14

The truth is in God’s Word. The Holy Spirit guides you into an understanding of the truth as revealed in the Scriptures. What He hears from God, He speaks to you. He will always glorify Jesus and be consistent with the Word of God.

Be Filled With the Spirit

Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but BE FILLED WITH THE
SPIRIT. Ephesians 5:17-18
God’s will is for every believer to be filled with His Spirit. His desire is that you be continually overflowing with His Spirit. Remember, Jesus COMMANDED the disciples not to leave Jerusalem until they had been endued with power (Luke 24:49, Acts 1:4). He also said those who believe on Him SHOULD receive the Holy Spirit (John 7:39).

Ask and You Shall Receive

Knowing that it is God’s will for you to be filled with the Holy Spirit gives you confidence in asking Him to baptize you with the Holy Spirit.
Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we
ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.I John 5:14-15

Jesus said your heavenly Father would give the Holy Spirit to those who would ask Him. You ask the Father to give you the Holy Spirit and have confidence you shall receive (Luke 11:9-13).

A New Tongue

One of the signs Jesus said would follow those who believe was “they will speak with new tongues” (Mark 16:17).
Isaiah prophesied about this. “For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, to whom He said, ‘This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest,’ and, ‘This is the refreshing’; yet they would not hear” (Isaiah 28:11-12). It would be a rest and a refreshing to the believer.

The 120 believers (Jews) all spoke with other tongues on the day of Pentecost when they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4). The Gentiles in the house of Cornelius spoke with tongues when the Holy Spirit came on them (Acts 10: 44-48).

Likewise, the people at Ephesus spoke in tongues when the Holy Spirit came on them (Acts 19:6).

Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit when Ananias laid hands on him. He later told the Christians at Corinth. “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all” ( I Corinthians 14:18). He said praying in the Spirit edifies or builds up the believer (1 Corinthians 14:4). In his message to the Corinthians, he concluded his instructions on tongues with these words: “Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and DO NOT FORBID TO SPEAK WITH TONGUES. Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:39-40).

Gifts of the Spirit

There are supernatural gifts of the Spirit given to believers to minister to one another. These are separate from man’s natural abilities, talents, and education. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 1 Corinthians 12:7-11

There is a variety of gifts that the Spirit gives to believers to build up the Body of Christ. Each person may at different times minister with any number of the gifts as the Spirit wills.

So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them; if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:5-8

Of course, every believer does not operate in all the gifts all the time. The gifts of the Spirit are manifested to meet needs as they arise. Several gifts might come forth at one time to minister to an individual or to a body of believers. It is the Spirit who ministers as He wills. At the same time, the believer must allow himself to be used of the Spirit and yield as the Spirit directs. (1 Corinthians 14:32).

This word may be of great help. The Scripture plainly teaches the difference between the public ministry gift of tongues and personal prayer in the Spirit. While all may not have the ministry of tongues in the church for the whole body of believers (1 Corinthians 12:28-30), all may speak with tongues in personal prayer for edification (1 Corinthians 14:4-5). Remember, “Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40).
